War of the Buttons (La nouvelle guerre des boutons)

Oops, just missed it! This film is no longer available on Netflix streaming or DVD.

After bringing you Les Choristes in 2004, Christophe Barratier directs another heart-warming coming of age story in War of the Buttons

A family feud has been stewing for generations upon generations within the beautiful countryside of France, between the two neighboring cities of Longeverne and Velran. The story begins as this child's warfare starts to mirror the world's war of the early 1940s.

Based on true events, these innocent young men learn first hand the virtues of tolerance, acceptance, and understanding during Nazi occupied France. The young hero leading the pack in Longeverne is Lebrac (Jean Texier), a trouble-maker with a sweet spot for the new girl in town with a mysterious past, Violette (Ilona Bachelier).

As the school teacher, Guillaume Canet does a great job of providing guidance and leadership in this confusing calm before the storm.

Even though the film can err on the side of Disney cheese at times, it's a delightful family choice, and of course, young love never fails to put a smile on anyone's face.
