This film is no longer available on Netflix streaming or DVD. Before you run out to the nearest theater to see Meryl Streep's latest romp as a gaudy socialite from the 1920's in Florence Foster Jenkins, you must consider the more genuine and authentic French version on Netflix, Marguerite, directed by Xavier Giannoli and starring the endearing and delicious Catherine Frot in the title role.

Based on true events that happened in America but are transposed here in post WWI France, Marguerite tells the complex story of a rich woman who is so devoted to pursue her dreams of being an opera singer, she falls deep into her own delusion. Without spoiling you in any way, you quickly discover that Marguerite is clueless about how abysmally off-key she is, but because of her money and status, and because nobody wants to be the one bringing the bad news, none of her friends dare tell her her voice probably killed Bizet and Mozart a second time. But will they let her sing on a stage in front of 2,000 thousands spectators? 

Xavier Giannoli finds the perfect tone in this tragicomedy about denial, lies and loneliness. Supported by an all-around impressive cast, Marguerite is moving yet funny, cruel yet inspiring.
